About this Blog

Meet my very 1st horse, Lazarus.
I couldn't wait for Santa anymore or ask one more time for a pony for my bday (after age 30 it got embarrassing). I took matters in my own hands and I finally decided to pick a pony that needed a new home. Laz found me as I contemplated with this idea. He was sweet yet very sassy, fresh off the track, Thoroughbred (OTTB).

Night Moves

Yesterday, my car was in the shop...ugh. It remains there until Monday (hopefully) and so I wasn't sure if I was able to get to the barn last night.
My Husband came home earlier than anticipated, so he tossed me the keys to our other car, and Mason and I ran out the door.
Rush hour-it took me 1-1/2 hr to get to the barn.
The sun was starting to descend when I pulled in, but Laz saw me and knickered like "Where were you!?! Let's gooooooo!"
I grabbed him, did a two minute pick-hooves-curry-off-mud-swipe-off-dirt-brush and tossed on his rope halter.  He was practically bursting with energy in this cooling evening so I figured a hand walk would be great for us both.  He was extra mouthy and kept grabbing his rope lead and my shirt.  I could tell, he was feeling young and spirited.
We walked for about 5 minutes and he turned to me with this silly face and did a straight 4 legs in the air jump and guinea pig squeal! "EeeeeeeEEE!"
He felt good.  He wasn't misbehaving (if I was riding, then YES) but I allowed him to lunge and play and he bucked more than I've seen him buck in a long time! "EeeeEEEeeee" and arched his neck and trotted and bucked, and farted and bucked some more!
He just wanted to play, play, play.
So, that's all we did.
Sometimes, there is this moment with Laz, when he plays, plays and then takes it a bit far and it turns to anxiety.  He almost went there, but I asked him to come back down for a walk (which he tried to resist), he started chewing anxiously and then sighed, licked, and walked.
We finished by hand walking together
He did great, other than when the two younger BO's pups came in the arena playing with each other, Laz got a bit spooked and wheeled around kicking out at them, several times. Bad Pony!
I finally got the dogs out of the arena and Laz mentally came back to me so we were able to walk around calmly for about 10 more minutes.
It was a quick workout but worth it!

Nothing like a pair of Fraggle Rock bangs in the sunset

  1. Aaaaaaa, Fraggle Rock! I am SO down with Fraggle Rock -- thanks for the childhood flashback. :-)

It seems like Laz is really starting to understand that you're his leader, and he's responding well to your cues for him to calm down. That is HUGE! Congrats!

  4. Oh don't you love it when your horse is happy to see you! That is the best feeling ever! I think sometimes that Fall brings the best out in horses. No bugs, pretty horse silhouettes against the leaves, a little spring in their steps--oh so nice! Of course, this is the very weekend five years ago when I bought my horse so it could be I'm just feeling nostalgic! Still, you just can't beat it when your horse gets all guinea pig squealy just for you. Happy Laz!!
