About this Blog

Meet my very 1st horse, Lazarus.
I couldn't wait for Santa anymore or ask one more time for a pony for my bday (after age 30 it got embarrassing). I took matters in my own hands and I finally decided to pick a pony that needed a new home. Laz found me as I contemplated with this idea. He was sweet yet very sassy, fresh off the track, Thoroughbred (OTTB).
Join us for our re-training, rehabbing from laminitis and testing all parts of mixed up horsemanship and partnership, and luck...

Weekend relaxation part 2

So I wanted to get another few photos of Laz's rear right foot. Can you see all that growth on the outer side? I HOPE that is a great sign.

This is the same foot (rear right) but taken from the inside (aka under his belly). I don't see the same growth rings as on the other side which is strange but may have to do with the wedges that he had on for a few shoe-ings. The bubble or abscess still hasn't come out. Cliff, the barefoot specialist, thinks it may come out when he trims on March 19th.
In the meantime, Laz is doing very well on these heartbar shoes...and we've cut back his Equioxx pain/anti inflammatory from full dose, to thirds, to now a 1/4 of a tube a day. He is doing very well with that gradual change
This was an awful angle to try and photograph him. Behind me is the electric fence and let's just say, I wasn't willing to test it for a better photo.
I think he's looking better, gained a little more so he's not quite ribby but I need to get him thin for his feet's sake.
The curling on his neck is not Cushings...it's dirt.

Ellie the young paint hung out with us the whole time I was there yesterday
Laz and Ellie have started playing with each other a bit more

Jessie, who is Ellie's Mom came over to show her disaprovel. I know she likes Laz but when she's in heat, she doesn't like ANY boys!!! Or perhaps she likes ALL the boys, lol!

Laz smelling Jessie, while she was 'winking' at him

What a tease. Jessie, if you like this face...go for it!

After Laz was mostly relaxed, the wind picked up and so did his interest in something that I couldn't see.
He stood SO tall and made himself SO big. He was coiled ready to spring into action and race around his pen.
The other horses's remained relaxed and were like "What is your deal?" and so he calmed down. I felt like he was waiting for someone else to react and then he would have jumped up and sqeauled with delight. Did I mention when he squeals he sounds like a giant guinea pig. "E...eeeeee!" It's not masculine.

Ok, back to playing with Ellie...the monster went away
Love how the hay stains his little mouth

  1. Kristen - Laz is so cute! I know this squeal you speak of...it is scary when Pie squeals and I am leading him because I know he is going to jump next...usually right on me! But, it is a funny, very unmasculine squeal when he is turned out!
I like the signs of growth on Laz's hoof. Surely, that is good news. I can't wait to hear what Cliff does next. And less pain meds - hooray! It looks like you had a nice warm weekend with your boy. He must love your visits.

  2. Laz looks so happy :) It is great to see a horse just getting to be a horse sometimes. How lucky for him that he has an owner that is doing that for him! Can't wait to hear more about barefoot farrier. Your posts have def sparked my intrest about the topic :)

  3. So what is up with his foot? I have been reading and i don't really seem to get what started it. Why is the outside growing and the inside looking like it is seperating from the cornet? Maybe I haven't read far enough back on you blog.

  5. I have a horse who had a hoof that looked like that last June. He was so bad off we had to get him up every couple of hours to keep his gut moving. Time, good nutrition, aspirin, MSM, and trimming have brought him a long way. He cantered in his paddock last Friday. Yup, I cried!

  6. ROFL at the pic of Laz making kissy faces at Jessie! Nothing like some good old fashioned flirtation to make ya feel better. :-)
So, only ten more days until Laz's first natural barefoot trim -- I'm sure you're nervous/excited/nauseous/hopeful! I've got fingers, toes, and eyes crossed for your boy.
Just wanted to add -- have you been soaking is hay? It drastically cuts down on the amount of sugar; and, of course, right now you want him to have as little sugar as possible. I'm smacking myself for not suggesting it earlier!
    Hugs to Laz

  7. Frizzle-so much learning for me..no I have not been soaking his hay but I promptly asked Cliff about it. Awaiting his answer. Thanks for always asking and checking in..there is an empty stall next door, interested? ;) I could use all the help I can get!
Eventer79-I LOVE my job..so lucky to still be working too!
Anonymous-Laz is moving quite well and only lays down a few times t/o day for about 15-30 minutes. BUT I am obsessed with his eating/drinking to make sure GUT is ok too! Obsessed may be slightly downplaying it even.
Eva-thanks for commenting..I left a comment on your awesome blog too today! :) Lots of great info on your site!
Juliette-Pie does that jump too?! The "MOM..what was that, HOLD ME!?" as they trample you! we have our work cut out for us when Laz starts feeling better..lots of ground work and manners refresher I'm sure. I may wear my helmet for it in fact! No joke. lol!
SassySki-his foot pictured in the one with the most rotation (laminitis) and I'm not sure why the growth looks that way but I'm documenting with photos so hopefully I can see a difference as this barefoot trimmer works his magic. Scary isn't it...it just looks wrong to me on the inside. That visual is what keeps me up at night.

  8. Obsessing about the gut is good! Although folks may think you odd when you greet your horse with "Get up and poop!"

  9. I'm so glad that Laz is doing well, and he seems so happy in those pictures. I know what today was suppose to be, and glad that he is doing well. I'm excited to see how his first trim goes!! :)

Love to Laz from me and Denali (don't tell Salem!)

He probably couldn't eat those cookies hu? Well, he can have them when he's better!

  10. Hey Denali- Well...no Laz can't have his paddock prince cakes BUT he did have one when they first came and he gobbled/sobbered it up. They will keep until I can get him healthy again..but no sugars for him for quite a while.
It was so nice being able to be out there March 9th and not doing what I thought I had to do...whew. Hopeful he still progresses forward and yes, I am SUPER excited and SUPER nervous for his first trim too!!!!!
Denali can love lots of handsome dark beauties..I think she prefers it that way, dont you? ;)
