About this Blog

Meet my very 1st horse, Lazarus.
I couldn't wait for Santa anymore or ask one more time for a pony for my bday (after age 30 it got embarrassing). I took matters in my own hands and I finally decided to pick a pony that needed a new home. Laz found me as I contemplated with this idea. He was sweet yet very sassy, fresh off the track, Thoroughbred (OTTB).

To the left, to the right!

Molting! The shedding is beginning and I love getting that winter coat out!

Laz almost looks a little hay belly chunky to me..I'm double checking with Cliff and Vet to make sure he is at a good weight for his laminitis. I don't want him heavy on his feet but I have to admit, I HATE the ribs that stuck out!
It was raining this weekend which is why he looks so awful half wet/dry and sandy below

Then I was thinking how unfortunate that his mane goes to the right because it leaves his left side so exposed to the elements. His has the barn on his right and the wind/weather usually comes in to the left but I like him facing the other horses so I don't want to move his feeder but it leaves his left neck totally exposed.

I also noticed that the BO's horses, the majority of their horses have manes that flop to the right, except for one.
What side does your horse's mane grow to?

  1. My horse's mane is mostly to the right, but the first six inches or so usually fall on the left.

  2. 1/2 of Granite's likes to flop to the left, but I refuse! So he spends a week or so, here and there with braids to train his mane to stay on the left. I pulled his mane yesterday (pics on the blog!) and braided it before I put him in the pasture so it wouldn't be tempted to flop to the wrong side!

  3. Yep, we always trained the manes to lie on the right. We have to be proper English people with manes on the correct side!
Salem's mane drives me crazy because it is SO thick and has many cowlicks. So, it is next to impossible to get it even. Totally makes me nuts!

  4. It is easy to train the mane. Much easier than moving the feeder :) Unless, you want it to lay to the right for tradition reason, it doesn't matter what side it is. Just braid it on the left and shortly it will lay that way.

  5. Shoot, I'm just happy if it's all on one side, or lays down at all!

  6. Noble's on the left, Maisie's on the left - except for a bit near the poll that always goes to the right, and Dawn's on the right.

  7. LOL! It's interesting...Laz is mainly on right, except for his cow lick after his bridle path that flops over to the left, not even going to talk about his fraggle rock forelock that doesn't hardly grow and is frizzy and has a cowlick under it too! That god showing was never our goal. :)

  8. My mare's lays on her left. I have to say that Laz's "fragle rock" forelock (love that term btw) was one of the first things that got me hooked on your blog! I just love the pictures of him, he is one of a kind, no doubt about it. Looking forward to Friday.

  9. The right side is the "correct" side the mane should grow but since no one cares about that much anymore. My pony and Indigo have their manes on the left and all the others are on the right.

  10. Olly's mane is to the right, but like the first few inches down from his bridle path flips to the left. I braid it the night before any show so it will lay altogether. Oh, and i HATE winter coats. I bundle him up and curry the heck out of him!

  11. Kristen, you totally cracked me up -- "fraggle rock forelock"!!! Love that! ROFL.
God, I used to adore that show. That and The Muppets. Thanks for reminding me of my childhood. :-)

  12. Denali's lays on the right. It's getting long and will need butchered, I mean cut again soon. She HATES getting it pulled. She's starting to look like a broodmare.

  13. LBR's is on the right except for after I comb it neatly and he shakes like a dog. He can manage to split it evenly on each side just to irritate me.

  14. Izzy's is half on the right, half on the left. I guess I'll just braid when we go to a show and no one will know. ;-)

  15. Both of my horses manes lay on the left. When we first got Casey, half would go left, half would go right. I trained it to all lay left. But, I didn't know it was supposed to lay on the right! I prefer the left side myself. Maddie's mane already was to the left when we got her. It just seems silly to fix it since if I show them in anything English, their manes will undoubtedly be braided anyways.
