About this Blog

Meet my very 1st horse, Lazarus.
I couldn't wait for Santa anymore or ask one more time for a pony for my bday (after age 30 it got embarrassing). I took matters in my own hands and I finally decided to pick a pony that needed a new home. Laz found me as I contemplated with this idea. He was sweet yet very sassy, fresh off the track, Thoroughbred (OTTB).

Too HOT to handle

It's been HOT here in Michigan and seems like everywhere!
Laz is still doing exceptionally well and is walking better and better everyday.
I still notice that he's landing toe first on his club foot (front right) so I'm hoping that too, will change in the future.  His Right rear is much better and my new trimmer encouraged me to ride Laz around at the walk to help his sole to self shed which is has a bit (but probably mostly to her small trimming adjustments too).
Laz and I strolling around the property
Don't judge the yoga capris, tank top, flip flops or riding Laz in his rope halter with barrel racing reins, lol.
Hey...at least I rock the helmet law :)
Look at that low, happy head :)
Hot day but not a hot headed TB
Then, this past weekend was my 5 yr wedding anniversary, so we escaped to Torch Lake, Michigan
Have you ever been???
It's literally like Carribean waters but in Michigan.
The water is crystal clear and a turquoise blue....insane beauty!!
This was the sunset the first night
 Oh, and the second night
Who cued the Swan family to come swim in?
Perfection
In the morning, swimming in the cool water during the HOT sun was amazing amazing amazing.
I kept wishing that I had Laz with me, for an awesome ride in this water.
He would LOVE!
Driving home, we had a summer storm above our head the whole 4 hours home.

It's SO hard to travel when you have such a sweet boy waiting at home.
I'm always torn and feel so guilty when I leave him.
That combined with my insane work load, it's been for a hectic summer for me.
Last night, I got to the barn at 7:30ish (home by 10 pm..ugh)
Lazaroo was itching his bites.
While I was gone, he got more bites and his little hives popped back.
Not as bad as before, but enough that I gave him a vinegar/water sponge bath and then sprayed the bejesus out of him.
I also broke down and bought a fly sheet for him today.
I leave again in two weeks, for TWO WEEKS and am having major anxiety about leaving him.
I want to make sure he is armed with everything while I am away.
Have you ever left your horses for 2 weeks?
I think I need Uguard for myself.
 My baby face
He looks like such a handsome young colt here :)
Getting a chest rub on my back from some handsome star studded OTTB

I also had given Laz a bit of a hair cut to allow some ventilation in preparation for this heat, a week or so ago.  His standing has gotten more square too, now that he's able to stand pain free on his right rear, YAY!
Thursday morning, I'm also having my vet do an IR test on Laz
I'm all about knowing what is going on with him and firming up how his system is running now.
I'm doing the new Non-fasting test recommended by Dr. Kellon.
He can't have 'grain' (his T/C feed) or carrots (treats) 15 hrs before test, but he can have his hay like normal and be out like normal. No forced exercise but normal turnout is good.
It will help me decide his grazing future and his feeding/diet needs that much better.
Wish us luck that he isn't IR.......I'm hoping that assuming his laminitis came from Putomac fever, that he won't be, but we'll see.  I'll post results when I get them next week, back from MSU.

  1. Glad Laz is feeling better. Cute pix of you two. :) I hope the ir test gives you helpful results.

Since I have had him, I have only been away from Val for the one week I sent him to his trainer's farm to get away from an impending hurricane. I may never go anywhere again lol!

  2. Love your riding outfit! Hahaha. And I'm glad you're a smartie and wear your helmet.

Laz is looking great -- looks like he is standing better already. The one "haircut" pic...I don't know, something about his body just seems more relaxed (??). It will be very interesting to see the IR results, too (fingers crossed for no IR!!).

I feel ya on the stressing over leaving your baby. But, I mean, we do need to have lives outside of our ponies, right? OK, I'm trying to sound normal and rational, but the truth is that I would be a total basketcase and writing a million notes/reminders for whoever took care of Salem. (Did you ever see the movie "Best In Show"? There's a part where these two guys call home and have to talk to their dogs on the phone, sing them a song, etc. -- too funny! Also totally me!)

Did you get the Schneider's fly sheet? I want to buy one, but they're out of 82"s in the one that I want to get for Salem. He got a nice (brand new) fly sheet donated to him by a fellow boarder, but it has no belly wrap, no neck guard, and it rubs the hair off his moobs :-( SO sad!).

    Happy anniversary!!!

  3. Hey! I always worry about my horses too. I leave quite often as we know. Right now I am on away on a 2 week stint. It sucks...I miss them! But I know they are doing great. We have to be confident that where we choose for them to live is the right place where they will be safe and well cared for in our absense.

It looks amazing to see Laz standing square! And you're so right, he looks so much like a young man in that one photo! What a cutie!!

Glad you had fun on your trip! That place looks beautiful!

  4. Awww - Laz looks wonderful. I'm glad that he's been doing so well with his foot/feet.

I've never been to Torch lake, but I'd LOVE to go someday. I've heard that it is breathtakingly beautiful, and your pictures just make me want to go even more. Glad you had fun :)

  5. Love the bareback pics! What a happy TB you have. Had no idea we had such beautiful water in Michigan. I have never been way from Tucker for two weeks, but I have had crazy weeks at work where I haven't seen him for almost two weeks straight. It's torture. You'll be fine though, Laz is in good hands!

  6. I am not understanding exactly what an IR test is?? I had to plan to be away from my boys for 3 months, due to my surgery. So yes, it's super hard!!! But I have a super trusting friend that I paid to come once a week to check on them and play with them for an hour! That helps more:)

  7. This is all so interesting!

Yes.. HATE leaving the beast, but we've had several multi-week absences... I HATE it. hate. I have no tips for making it better other than distracting myself with wine and cheese. :)

  8. No I haven't ever left my horse for two weeks and I'd probably be a wreck if I had to lol. That's sucks you'll be gone so long, but I hope you have fun. Laz will be perfectly fine. Time isn't the same to them as it is to us. :)

He looks so good! I'm glad he's doing so well. I'll keep my fingers crossed the test comes back negative.

Happy anniversary! Your trip sounds amazing. What fun. Those clouds are scary looking on your trip back.

Have a safe trip and have fun!

  9. I know what you mean about leaving him behind. Anytime I have to leave Napa, all I can think about are the beautiful places I see along the way that I wish we could ride through!
