About this Blog

Meet my very 1st horse, Lazarus.
I couldn't wait for Santa anymore or ask one more time for a pony for my bday (after age 30 it got embarrassing). I took matters in my own hands and I finally decided to pick a pony that needed a new home. Laz found me as I contemplated with this idea. He was sweet yet very sassy, fresh off the track, Thoroughbred (OTTB).

Gunna wash that rot right out of his hair...

So, here is our 'wonder' shampoo to rid the rot
At $39 a bottle, it had better leave him GLISTENING!
I do have to say, so far our new Vet has not lead us astray..so I trust her.
She mentioned the Captan is what makes it so great.
The same stuff that is used for Roses, she mentioned, for those that are flower people. She also mentioned when she's out of this wonder 'poo, she may try to make her own (for any of those that are daring, unlike myself)
So, here is the Rot..
See, I'm not a terrible terrible horse Mom...they are little, we are not talking a head to toe rain rot..but alas, still there is rot upon my Pony.
Up close, see how it's like a scab?
I guess, that is textbook ROT.
Can you tell I hate the word rot?
The superOTTB clearly is nervous about getting a bath.
See how I have to tie him up (I kid, he's loose because he rocks)
He really enjoyed his little sponge bath, it was 55 and sunny so perfect day to do it.
The directions say to work into the skin creating a sudsy lather and leave on for 10 min, then rinse.

Any bird people out there?
These two little cuties have moved into the barn and are chirping up a storm, oh and pooping, but they also eat bugs like crazy I was told...I just am curious as to what they are??
Welcome friends!
Just don't poop on my Pony!!!

**side note; you may notice in the next couple weeks, Mason won't be in any photos at the barn. He sprained (we hope not tore) his ACL, and per Vet's recommendation, he needs to stay at home for 14 days and was put on Rimadyl to help with inflammation and pain. Day #2 on it, and Mason is bounding around our house pleading to go to the barn when I leave. We are hopeful he makes a quick recovery and we can avoid a surgery. If he's not better within the two weeks, xrays will have to happen but I'm hopeful he's going to pull out of it.
Which leg?
Oh, you know..the right hind. ;)

  5. Ringworm is a fungus, and is in the same family as the fungii that cause (and can be treated the same as) athlete's foot, jock itch, and yeast infections in humans and dogs. After this, pick up a bottle of Selsun Blue (anti-fungal) so you can nip it in bud if you see any more spots of the rain-rot on Laz. Or any spots in between Mason's toes, since dog paws are a favorite for yeast to grow. Our winter was wet, just not cold, so I've got a teeny bit on my dog's foot to get rid of. ... And I'm a groomer!

Good luck getting rid of the rain rot, and good luck to Mason, hope he doesn't have to have surgery.

    1. VERY interesting suggestion about Selson Blue..hmmmmm I'll keep that in mind for the future when my mega bottle runs out. :)

    1. We are loving it too so far, expect so expensive!!! Thankfully he's only on it for 14 days and hopefully he wont need it long term. Laz is a water boy, he was 'pawing' at the hose water as I was rinsing him, lol.

  7. Those little birds are swallows. Totally harmless to horses unless they are infected and poop in the horses food or water. I am assuming that the shots went okay since you didn't mention anything about it...

    1. Yes, so far, all signs point to no difference in Laz from last vaccine. WHEW, I'm starting to lessen the white knuckle a bit. :)

  8. Tea tree oil worked on my mare's rain rot. She had a few little spots just like that. I cleaned the spots with chlorhexidine rinse then dabbed on some tea tree oil and voila, no more rot.

    1. Yes, chlorhexadine and tea tree oil are awesome for rainrot (and lots of other things, too!).

  10. Poor sweet Mason. :-( Geez, is there some kind of RH curse going around or something? That's also Salem's bad leg.

Don't worry, all horses get rainrot at some point no matter how OCD their owners are. Salem had it when he came down from Ocala and I didn't even notice it until I started body-clipping him--before, I had just thought he had dry skin. Lots of fur trapping in moisture is definitely a prime living environment for the yuckies, so hopefully Laz will shed out soon. That will help a lot!

    1. I know..what is up w/ the RH? Even my Husband who was out running sprained/hurt his Achilles on his RH! I was laughing as I iced, wrapped it up in a millisecond, like "I got this!"

  11. MSM also works incredibly well on rain rot, but it's oily and it smells. I usually dab a little on the front of the boy's cannon bones, since they get some from pee splatters. Clears it right up!

Barn swallows are pretty, but if they start building a nest overhead of an inconvenient spot, I highly recommend you knock it down (before they get too far with the nest-building). I know it sounds mean, but by the time they are done raising their babies, there will be a foot-high pile of bird poo under the nest. The ones we had relocated to a more "convenient" (for us) spot, and raised their babies in peace.

    Sending good thoughts to Mason!

    1. Hi Jenj-I think you mean MTG, right? Yes I have that stuff too but of course, it doesn't work quick miracles on Laz. It's good stuff for other things (his tail dock when dry) and keeping scratches at bay before they develop, so it's def. something I always have at the barn. :)

  12. Ick, poor guy but Frizle is right. No matter what I try my filly gets some every fall. I was told it was because of the cold and their immune system going down. She gets blanketed and stands in her shelter with a huge pile of hay and still gets it :/

The RH curse is right! My filly is dealing with an injury to the LH but my roommate's horse has a bad injury to the RH.

  13. Poor Mason. :-( Sending positive thoughts that surgery is not required. Good luck with Laz's rain rot. I believe Selsun Blue and MTG are the treatments of choice by some of the owners at my barn. Love your barn swallows. :-)

  14. Oh heck! Sorry to hear about Mason jumping on the RH bandwagon. Hope no surgery is required.

Laz is too cute as per usual... :)

  15. Listerine is what knocks the rain rot off of our horses here that swim every day in the pool and get wet no matter what we do!

  16. Ooo, lucky you, barn swallows! They should help with bug control tremendously, although they will poop. Trade-offs I guess.
Love the pink trees--how lovely, with a lovely clean horse in front!
